What the heck is a "SuperUser Trap"? I had no idea what to call it, so I came up with that lame excuse for a title. The bottom line is that I wanted to announce that I've started to blog again. I figured that I just need to get with it and write on things that I run into throughout the week. This particular blog article is about how one can turn an administration "applet" such as Messages into a "module" to where permissions may be given to an admin to manage Messages, but without having to give them Super User access. I have revised the Approve Membership Lite hack for use with the latest release of RavenNuke(tm) 2.2.0 (aka: 2.20.00). Do remember that this version is ONLY for the 2.2.0 release of RavenNuke(tm) and is NOT interchangeable with other nuke versions/forks.

This hack provides a way to force approval of new user registrations (as well as can even auto-approve). It takes the latest RavenNuke(tm) 2.2.0 Your Account module and the Approve Membership Module version 6.1.6 from Ulsoft and provides a simplified "Lite" version that only has the user approval piece (i.e., no "Custom Fields").

I know, I know, am I ever really going to make up my mind about PHP5-only or not and what to do with the HTML Newsletter. Well, since I was already about 50% through development of the 1.4 release AND the module is in RavenNuke(tm) which is still slated to support PHP4 for some time to come, I am changing my mind. The 1.x branch will continue to be developed, and I will not make a conscience effort to make it break under PHP4. Promise.

My goal has never changed: to support this community of *nukers as best I can with the time allowed. I had to be reminded of that and so existing products from this site that currently run under both PHP4 and PHP5, will continue to do so. However, I still reserve the right to only do bug fixes on any and all products. Most likely, only HTML Newsletter will be enhanced under the 1.x branch. 1.x will be reserved for PHP4 compatible and 2.x will be for PHP5-only as time goes on, even new products released after today will follow this "branch" versioning system.

Several folks have offerred up suggestions for improvement to this hack (thank you Susann and others) since version 1.1.0 was released. So with the upcoming RavenNuke(tm) 2.2.0 (also known as 2.20.00) enhancement release, I made some improvements, both enhancements and bug fixes. See download change log for details.

Why would someone need something like this? PHP-Nuke uses the PHP mail() function and many web hosts these days are shutting off access to this function. These hosts are now requiring authenticated SMTP. Hence the need for a replacement for PHP-Nuke's mailer functions. For example, the user registration process will not work properly as it requires an email activation link (to try and slow down spammers from auto registration).

For a more detailed explanation of the TegoNuke(tm) Mailer and a more detailed list of features, check out the TegoNuke(tm) Mailer NukeForge page. This package was created by combining the administration piece from PHPNukeMailer and the back-end of Swift Mailer. Why another mailer for PHP-Nuke? Because "choice" is good for the "consumer".
