Multilingual function in Nuke

Okay we all know that the multilingual function in Nuke isn´t perfectly.
The urls for other languages within the language block looks like this:
index.php?newlang=english or index.php?newlang=french
Wouldn´t it be cool and much more seo friendly to have just such nice urls:
mysite.com/en mysite.com/fr

How does this work in Nuke ?
Any ideas ?

I'm not even sure why you would want to tap those links.
From what I remember of how nuke handles languages, those links are specifically for changing the language in the language block. The changes when made will only be applied during that 'session' and as search engines do not use sessions, the links would not be of any value except to increase the number of 404 errors indexed.

I have seen a view Nuke sites with tapped lang files and the normal look of the most multilingual sites is with just a flag instead of a complete language block and it looks much better.
Because I´m not using all in Nuke available languages I would prefer to get rid of the language block. After some years running a multilingual website I´m tired to see that block all the time.
However, from time to time I get backlinks and the url
mysite.com/index.php?newlang=french is a bit long would be better to have a short url.

Of course all those long lang urls are indexed by search engines.

I have moved this to under ShortLinks Misc as I feel that this is really related to that right? I am also going to add this to the list, as I see what you mean by the country flags. This has never been tapped previously in any of the GT variants, but it could certainly be done.

Yes Montego, you understood the problem correct.
One more thing on your long list. Smile

So after the url is tapped the next step would be to change the articles also.
For example:

www.mysite.com/article205.html

to:

http://www.mysite.com/en/article205.html

www.mysite.com/fr/article205.html

So thats my vision for a better multilingual function in Nuke. It´s currently not available but it can be done like you said.

Susann, I understand the requirement, but I would not be expecting this to be a quick change. While I agree with the approach, so many sites out there have already been tapped the old way. This will look like a site move rather than a simple few links changing. That presents problems.

This will have to be taken up as a 2.0.0 type change. Also, to be honest, what you are asking may even require core nuke changes because the language is really being passed via the user's cookie I believe. So, I am really not sure the above can even be done.

Definitely some "food for thought".

I can understand your reasoning Susann, I'm just strugglng to see how it can be achieved in a way that would allow the link to be indexable.
At the moment, we can use cookies or sessions to pass data back to the browser but as I mentioned, search engines/spiders/bots do not normally use cookies or sessions.

If the 'tap' is based on whatever is in the site preferences, that is much more achievable but the way I'm reading this;
yoursite.com/en/xx would be the english language version of the site
yoursite.com/de/xx would be the German language version of the site etc and all these links would be available to bots and therefore the site would be indexed for each language type????

It is certainly food for thought as Montego said. Hmm...
It would entail passing the language setting as part of every (none admin)url as thats the only way I can see being able to 'tap' it.
