Help Support RavenNuke(tm) using Flattr

Feeling generous this time of year? Why not throw a little bit Raven's way in support of the RavenNuke(tm) CMS that many of use each and every day. Even before RavenNuke(tm), Raven's web site has been a generous provider of community support for PHP-Nuke and other forks for many years, with very little asked for in return. It takes money to host such a site and it takes many volunteers to help provide the support that is there freely given.

While PayPal is always a good way to donate to many of the great community-based projects, Flattr is another great method of passing along your thanks. I wrote an article about Flattr several months back as a news article on this site to introduce this knew way of giving. At the time, Raven didn't have a Flattr account, and while he does not display a Flattr button, you can always donate via Flattr to RavenWebServices (Raven) directly from the Flattr website.

The really GREAT feature with Flattr is that you can also subscribe to a "Thing" - in this case to RavenWebServices - to where the service will automatically generate a click each month for as many months as you wish, essentially acting as if you had clicked to donate each month. If you only have a little bit to give each month, why not join up with Flattr, find the few open source projects that you find useful and use on a regular basis, and show your appreciation. Every little bit helps and if all the RavenNuke(tm) site owners would just send a little bit each month, it would go a long way.

Now, to those who celebrate Christmas, Merry Christmas to you, and to all, have a Happy and Safe New Years!

New Release Candidates Being Tested

Just a quick update: HTML Newsletter 1.4.0 and TegoNuke(tm) Downloads 1.1.3 have been released to the RavenNuke(tm) team as release candidates. Each contains updates for issues identified by the team.

We are very excited about these releases as they will be incorporated into the upcoming RavenNuke(tm) 2.5.0 version. Development, of course, will continue to progress from Montego Scripts on these two products as each has defined product roadmaps. Click on the link and sign-in as anonymous to see any of our product roadmaps. If you want to suggest other enhancements, please post as such in our forums and we will gladly take these into consideration. Of course, as always too, if you find a bug, please use our forums to report them so we may correct them as soon as possible (often times giving resolutions early on in the forum threads themselves).

Beware of www.divshare.com!

Back in June, I had a need to make available a bunch of game photos to my son's team parents. I was having DVD burning issues at the time and so went looking for an on-line file hosting service which could handle a large zip file of the photos plus the download bandwidth. Unfortunately I didn't have a ton of time to investigate and I found one which looked like it would work for me: www.divshare.com. Bad decision... even paid for it.

Why a bad decision? I mean, their Privacy Policy, even today, says:

We will not disclose personally identifiable information we collect from you to third parties without your permission except to the extent necessary including:

To fulfill your service requests for services.

To protect ourselves from liability,

To respond to legal process or comply with law, or

In connection with a merger, acquisition, or liquidation of the company.

Hmmmm... no statement allowing for the selling of my email address to third parties. Just so happens, I am quite skeptical about any on-line service and so I use Yahoo! disposable email addresses and I create a new one each time I sign up with a new service. I name these disposable addresses in such a way that I can tell if they are selling my email address when I start getting emails unrelated to the service I signed up for.

What happened next? I have received nearly 50 spam messages to that specific email address. Now, in the grand scheme of things, given this was in the span of about 3 months, this isn't much. However, I do not appreciate being lied to and spammers to me rank right there alongside the common criminal. Now that I am done with my experiment of watching the spam come in, I have canceled my divshare account and deleted my disposable email address! Bye-bye you scum of the Earth!

So, if you are a follower of this site, or happen to run across this post in your searching for on-line file sharing/hosting services, maybe I will save you some headaches by not giving www.divshare.com your information.

Regards,

HTML Newsletter 1.4 Preview of Changes

As work is nearing completion on the long overdue HTML Newsletter 1.4 version, I felt it would be good to summarize some of the work which has been done. The 1.4.0 roadmap will show the complete list including upcoming release content (just don't hold me to the dates!), but here are few improvements worth noting:

All of the module now, both public and admin pieces, are 100% XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant. In addition, many code changes were made to bring the module code up to more closely follow the latest RavenNuke(tm) coding style and standards which have evolved over the years.

If you used quotes in your body text or subject line, and then you used the Preview function, you may have noticed that your quotes came back into your text once you backed out of your Preview. This issue was actually resolved as a part of the above code clean-up work. No more errant back-slashes messing up your body text!

Another annoyance (I'm sure) fixed was the ad-hoc email distribution list getting wiped out upon return from the Preview function.

The Fancy Content template is now truly XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant.

And more... see the Roadmap link above.

While I had to move out some nice new features due to time constraints and the desire to get this release into the next RavenNuke(tm) version, this is now a good clean and updated version to build upon.

Regards,

A few bugs were reported since the release of version 1.1.0 that we wanted to clean up quickly, hence this very small patch release.
Papamike Themes

If you are a RavenNuke(tm) user then you can't display your content properly without a theme. Right now I have 3 themes which are compliant to W3C standards XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1. You can find them at Papa Mike Creations Now having said that, the content on your website needs to be compliant too.

It's pretty easy to do:

Go to validator.w3.org to validate your XHTML code and go to jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator to validate your CSS.

Validate your domain name, then fix the errors (if any) that are found. I keep 2 browser windows open. One open to the validator and one to the domain. I also have my FTP client up and running too. Then just validate, fix errors, upload the file, validate, fix, upload ..... until you're done. Simple right? The foundation of your project is to start with a compliant theme and go from there. Another thing to mention is that ALL of the themes that come packaged with RavenNuke(tm) are compliant too.

Have fun with your theming. Also support Montego Scripts all you can. Help defray the cost in time and effort by making a donation.
